The ultimate guide you need for Pemuteran Bali. Hotels, Restaurants, and best activities Updated for 2020

Pemuteran is one of the great getaways in Bali. It’s located North West and mostly divers and snorkelers come here because of the stunning coral gardens. But if you are looking for a calm and relaxed place to escape to then this is also perfect for that.

Pemuteran offers a lot of natural sights that might seem from a fairy tale, the beaches look wonderful and the green scenery is even more amazing than any other place on the island. It is worth coming here for multiple reasons. In this guide, I will discuss the things to do, where to take your accommodation and where to eat.

The other great getaways in Bali are Candidasa and Amed.

Things to do in Pemuteran Bali

When you get bored with relaxing, you should know that you are doing what you should be doing on vacation. But I can’t blame you if you want to do or see some more, especially from Pemuteran, a mesmerizing gem.

Diving and Snorkeling in Pemuteran

Diving at Pemuteran Menjangan Island

A lot of people come to Pemuteran just for the diving or snorkeling adventures it has to offer. The water is the clearest I’ve seen for both diving and snorkeling in the whole of Bali and around the smaller islands (Nusa Penida, Gili Islands)

  • Biorock
  • Pemuteran Bay
  • Menjangan island (available via tour)
  • Underwater Temple Wall (available for diving only at -30 meters)

Biorock can be seen right off the beach at Taman Sari in Pemuteran. You can also rent goggles and fins right on the beach for 50k IDR. There are several banners on the beach about the Biorock project.

Biorock project is to enhance coral growth and it has been going on since 1998. It’s a huge steel structure to help coral grow 4 times faster than normal. (source:

I was snorkeling there in 2017, and it was amazing to see that the coral has grown so much. It’s a coral garden of its own, cheap to reach as it is only a few meters from the beach. You can do this without any touring company.

If you only have 1 day in Pemuteran where should you Snorkel / Dive?

If your time is limited I can understand that you don’t have the time to see all the underwater wonders of Pemuteran. But I would definitely recommend togo to Menjangan island with a tour for snorkeling.

It’s a bit pricey but worth it. You will take a boat and snorkel the clearest place of Bali. Diving can be done at the same places where the snorkelers are, but they just go a lot deeper alongside the reef.

Pemuteran Bali national park

West Bali National Park is 190 square kilometers. Only a part is available for visitors. Upon arrival, you should check-in at one out of the two park offices. You need to buy a permit and get a guide to do the trekking through the National Park.

For nature lovers and bird watchers, this park is an amazing experience. There are more than 160 different bird species in the National Park of Bali.

Pemuteran beach

Even though there are many sunbeds, it was not busy

Visit the beach for a swim or for relaxing and sunbathing. I like the Pemuteran beach because it is nice and calm compared to the beaches near Kuta and Legian. Besides that there is also some shade from trees on the beach. So if it is too hot you can find some shade easily.

Banyuwedang hot spring

These hot springs go up to 47 degrees Celcius. It’s hot. But it will relax your muscles and body. There are small pools for children available and different types. These hot springs are less visited than the one in Mount Batur next to the sunrise trek.

The entry fee for the hot spring is 20k and you can find it on the map here.

Birdwatching Bali Barat

fun place for bird watchers

Not only at the National Park in Pemuteran is great for bird watching, but at the shore, you can do a lot of bird watching. Here you can see the shorebirds and plenty of migratory birds during the season. Location for Bali Barat Birdwatching

Bali Tower

Panoramic view at Bali Tower

Bali Tower, a tall building made from mostly wood, is a nice restaurant. You can go up a few floors far above the trees. Going up does require you to eat/drink at the restaurant. It’s a nice view, and also pretty romantic.

Pura Melanting

For visiting this temple, you have to wear a sarong. This is rented out for a donation (amount of your choice). But it’s worth it, even though you are not a Hindu you can still experience the colorful place. It’s decorated nicely and the surroundings and architecture are a sight to see.

During bigger ceremonies, this temple can become very crowded with a lot of locals coming to pray and offer. It might be a bit too busy then but also something to witness.

Location on maps

Taman Beratan

It’s just a park with mangroves. Nature here is very beautiful though, and it’s a great escape from the busy life. Do use an anti-mosquito lotion when coming here.

Pura Batu Kursi

A short hike (15-45 minutes) depending on how fast you are. It’s a temple but the way here and at its destination offers a mesmerizing panoramic view. Great for sunsets or coming in early.

Location on maps

Temple Pulaki

Most people come here to relax outside the temple and watch the surroundings. Especially monkeys. These monkeys are reported to be more aggressive then other places so take care by not provoking them. They have an interest in shiny objects mostly (glasses, shades maybe a phone or camera even).

Accommodation in Pemuteran

In Pemuteran you have a choice of a (luxury) resort where you are surrounded by lots of nature, simple hotel accommodation and homestays. It depends on your budget, but during the low season the luxury resorts drop severely in prices. Because of this, I am going to cover the resorts and beach hotels of Pemuteran.

The Resorts of Pemuteran

The resorts in Pemuteran make you feel in a luxury private place where all the accommodations are far apart. The beach is nearby for everyone as well as the restaurants on the main road.

Taman Sari Resort in Pemuteran

Taman Sari is a collection of 4 private villas and several hotel-like accommodation types. I went to Villa Santai and the other rooms were not rented out. You can rent it also with your family for a family getaway. It’s about 600-800 square meters of a luxury vacation feeling here.

That’s me in front of the Taman Sari Villa Santai

Do check out their website for options at Taman Sari Pemuteran

Pondok Sari & Beach Resort

Another Charming resort I tried was the Pondok Sari & Beach Resort. A great choice and luxury feeling as well. It’s near the beach. SImply a great relaxing getaway and recommended for couples.

Kinaara resort & spa pemuteran bali

Another great place to stay for an affordable price is the Kinaara resort & spa. When you stay there, make sure your bungalow is not too close to the road since this resort is close to that. It gives that extra peace and quiet you are looking for in Pemuteran.

Matahari Beach Resort and Spa (5 Stars!)

If budget is no issue (about 2.5 Million IDR per month in low season) than this is your luxury resort. It is considered the 5-star hotel in Pemuteran Bali. I did not stay here myself, but you can take a virtual tour here on that resort.

Restaurants & Bars

Next to the main road, there are a lot of choices for warungs and restaurants to eat. Expect mostly seafood, as Pemuteran is a fishing village too like (Amed and Candidasa).

One place if you are going for drinks you should try is Joe’s Restobar. (Location)
